Two games are played each day and these are pick-up games with teams picked from those who show up. The age bracket is 50 and over and all skill levels are welcomed. The field is located off of CR512. Turn South on Barber Street and go a quarter of mile and the park is on the right. Contact Bob Martin at 772-766-1589 or rmartin1055@Bellsouth.net _______________________________________________________________________ LOST: Guys, I mistakenly left my 27oz red Miken Bat at the field on July 8th, probably either in front of the concession stand, or the bleachers on the first base side of field #3, or in the parking lot after the games. My bat has my name (Dan Deratany) and my phone number wrapped around the handle for easy identification. Also the grip and knob are heavily wrapped with white tape and the number 27 in large print is on the knob. If anyone has seen it or picked it up please give me a call at 321-777-7770 to turn it in, I would really appreciate it...Thank you! _______________________________________________________________________

Stretching
Exercises Check out the “Stretching Exercises 1 & 2 below to help you prevent injury by using the proper stretching techniques. It is very important, especially at our age, to show up at the field prior to the games and spend time jogging around the field at a slow pace, just to get warmed up prior to stretching out your leg muscles; this will help prevent leg injuries during the games. Also, it is a great idea to purchase a pair of “compression shorts” to wear under your softball shorts or pants; they really do make a difference. ____________________________________________________ Understanding How Teams are Drafted in our League By Dan Deratany Each season the previously formed teams are broken up and entered back into the draft, and each manager from the previous season rates his players abilities. At the meeting prior to the draft, the Draft Committee reviews the ratings of each player who is eligible for the draft. As each name is called, the committee members review each player's rating and either agree or disagree by voicing their opinion, based on the criteria listed in the Rules and Regulations, section II, Player and Roster Rules, a general consensus of opinion is agreed upon for a rating to be applied. After all of the players are rated they are also assigned a playing position that the Board deems is the best for that player. At the beginning of the draft three groups of player combinations are then put together: 1. Outfields (LF, LC, RC, RF), 2. Infields (1st, 2nd, SS, and 3rd), and 3. (Pitcher, Catcher, and Middle fielder). Careful consideration is given as to who should be designated to play each position in each group and all of the groups are then equally balanced. In a random drawing all teams are then formed by drawing out of a hat, an infield, an outfield and a pitcher combo. Once these teams are created, adjustments in team ratings are again looked at for balance. When all initial position players are set then the remaining players are assigned to each team, once this is done a review of the team ratings are again checked and if they are not in balance then players are moved around to create another equal balance of all teams. Once the final teams are formed and approved by the committee, the "48 hour rule" applies, which means that the teams are given out to the entire Board of Directors to be reviewed within that period of time to make sure potential problems are recognized and adjusted to assure balance and harmony. No team player is to be notified until after the 48 hours have passed and the final teams are approved. So you can see by this procedure that it is a joint effort by the whole Committee, and under no circumstances whatsoever shall one manager determine their own team, or even select a single player. So, the next time you hear someone say, "it's not fair, that manager stacked his team, that's why he's always winning", by understanding this procedure you will automatically know that it isn't so. We hope this helps with your understanding of how the draft works.________________________________________________________________ (Click on the Direct Sports logo above to access their catalog.)

We have devised various schemes to rate the players, and we also use our experience and intuition in grouping various players together, hoping to find the right chemistry for each team. Unfortunately, it has proven to be a difficult task, and though most of the teams we create usually are more or less equal in ability and talent, there is usually one team that seems to be much better than the rest. Last season it was Mercedes, and season before last it was Beringer’s, and the season before that the Diamond Backs were champs. I’m not so sure that is necessarily a bad thing, and I usually enjoy the sense of competition you get when playing a good team. However, having one superior team also can become a source of discontent, with players unhappy that it isn’t their team that wins the most games, or has players that are ALL able to play at a high level.
I think we need to remember one thing, folks. This is a RECREATIONAL league. We are here for two reasons. To have fun and to improve our skills. Many of our players compete on tournament teams and do play on a high level. Playing every Thursday night gives those players an opportunity to compete and sharpen their abilities. Many of our players also just come out for the fun of it, and because they might have lesser athletic ability or have had their skills dulled by father time, are not as strong players as others on their team might be. So, each team therefore will be comprised of players of varying abilities, and that is just how it is, and how it will always be with our league. The following is taken from our By-Laws that we created to help define our league: We, the team managers and at-large board members, hereby adopt these rules to provide a safe, friendly and recreational venue for senior players to enjoy the camaraderie and challenge of softball. It is our goal to attain competitive balance between the teams by utilizing all players, of varying skill levels, who desire to participate. Motto: Play your best — Winning is a bonus So, guys, let’s just have fun out there and enjoy the opportunity we have as seniors to play a game that we all love. Wins or losses should be forgotten by the time we leave the parking lot. If we can’t enjoy playing with others who are not as skilled as ourselves, then maybe it is time to find a new place to play. One thing I must say is, that although I do see many fine ballplayers I have not yet seen anyone that reminds me of Willie Mays. We are just a bunch of old guys out to have some fun playing ball with our friends. If we can remember that perhaps Thursday nights can be as much fun as we all want it to be. _______________________________________________________________ A Tale of History and a Hero By David "Bucky" Miller

So often they hastily go out and buy a new bat or glove without the benefit of others experience; and often they are unhappy with the performance of their acquisition, especially in the area of bat choice. Those “Old-Timers”, who play a lot generally know what works the best and where to get it! As most know, online internet purchases from sites like “Direct Sports”, if you mention FHS (Florida Half Century) softball, there is a significant discount. That’s where most get their Miken Ultra II’s, which brings up another subject and that is “dugout protocol”. It’s always appropriate to ask someone if you want to use their bat; never just grab someone’s bat without their permission. Especially since good composite bats cost a lot and wear out after so many swings. Generally they start at $185.00 on sale and go up from there. So as a matter of team protocol and respect, always get permission to use another’s equipment! Please checkout the three articles in the Batter's Box, that Lou Jiannine has written for our league, he has provided us with some very valuable bat information. ______________________________________________________________

Your Feedback is Requested
We would appreciate any feedback players might have regarding improvements we can make as far as running our league. We do have some concerns in regard to decreased attendance by players for games during this past season and we want to consider ways that we can improve on this. Also, if you have any suggestions regarding rules you would like to see changed or added please take this opportunity to let us know. Lastly, we would like to hear how would rate your overall experience this past season. Remember, our league is very unique. Not only are we a "seniors only" league, we are a self governed league. That means we all have a say in how things are run, so take this opportunity to let us know how you feel, by emailing us at alpine@cfl.rr.com.
